Whether a CGT discount applies, which shares are counted as sold, how a trust distribution is characterised, whether a holding is on capital or revenue account, whether you are a tax resident, and how an SMSF is treated all depend on facts the service does not know.

The service works from the records you enter, the records your connected accounts return, and third party market data. Any of those can be incomplete, delayed or wrong.

Figures commonly go out of date or out of step because of:

• corporate actions, such as share splits, consolidations, mergers, demergers, returns of capital, rights issues and buy-backs;
• dividend reinvestment plans and stapled securities;
• off-market transfers, inheritances and in-specie contributions;
• broker exports that omit brokerage, or that report in a different currency or on a different date convention;
• foreign exchange rates and the date on which they are applied; and
• trades made outside any connected account.

Check what the service shows against your broker confirmations, holdings statements and dividend statements before relying on it. Where they differ, your source documents are the record, not the service.

The service works out capital gains under the rules for sales made up to 30 June 2027, including the 50% CGT discount. From 1 July 2027 the discount is replaced by cost base indexation and a 30% minimum tax for growth after that date, under the Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Act 2026. Figures for sales from that date need to be worked out under the new rules, and you should not rely on the service for them until it says it supports them.
